- What just happened:
Chinese President, Xi Jing Ping, warmly received former Taiwan President Ma Ying-Jeou in Beijing
While Mr. Ma, who was president of Taiwan from 2008 to 2016, emphasized on maintaining peace and avoiding war during his remarks, Xi's was full of rhetorics for common identity shared between China and Taiwan and his vision of re-unification. Notably, Xi did not use menacing words nor threat of war.
- Why it is worth noting
China continues its stick 🏒 and carrot 🥕 approach and building political support within Taiwan in preparation for the upcoming taiwan crisis.
China also needs to prepare for the government once it took over Taiwan. Mr Ma and other politicians from the Nationalists, also known as the KMT, could serve as useful tools.
